General Meeting

October 11, 2016

President Herlinda Giandalia called the meeting to order at 9:48 a.m.

Herlinda announced that in lieu of exchanging gifts at our holiday luncheon, the Board suggested that Paletteers make a charitable gift this year. After discussion, a motion was moved, seconded and passed that those members who wished to participate bring to the holiday luncheon an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots or a check or cash for a donation to South Bay Cats, a pet rescue organization.

Farla Binder reminded everyone that the holiday luncheon is Wednesday, December 14th, at 11:30 a.m. at the Los Verdes Country Club, 7000 West Los Verdes Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes. The menu will consist of a chicken or fish entree, a salad, dessert, and beverage. Cost is $30. Send a check for $30 made out to Paletteers to Annie Clavel, membership chair. The mandatory deadline for payment is November 8, the date of our November meeting. Indicate on your check whether you want chicken or fish. There is a bar on the premises for those who want to purchase wine or a cocktail.

Treasurer Marsha Burnett reported that as of the end of the fiscal year in June Paletteers had $2,491. At present, the total is $3,600. Our largest expense is the deposit for the holiday party. Marsha reported that members have contributed about $200 to an award in memory of Carol Morris Ward. Members can still donate. One donation has been received so far to honor Helen Mallet, Emeritus.

Membership Chair Annie Clavel announced that she is currently updating the membership roster. It will be maintained on the web but will be available only to members via a link which Annie will provide. All members are asked to verify their roster information and to keep Annie informed in a timely manner of changes (annie@annieclavel.com). When the roster is ready, Mary Lou Slagter has volunteered to print and bring copies to a general meeting for those who do not have printing capability.

Herlinda announced that Paletteers is not on the list for a Lexus exhibition until 2018. We are on a waiting list for 2017. Herlinda asked for volunteers to investigate other possible show venues. Barbara St. John will contact the Malaga Cove Library and Annie Clavel will investigate the Loft in San Pedro. The main Palos Verdes Library District library was also mentioned as a possibility. Suggested as a possibility for participation in a public event was the Torrance Historical Homes Tour which this year had members of Destination: Art and the Torrance Artists Guild exhibiting at the Torrance Woman’s Club.

Herlinda asked for volunteers for a show committee to be in place for whenever a show is scheduled. The following members volunteered: Jim Morino, Barbara St. John, Dael Patton, Mary Lou Slagter, Mae Fuchino, Betsey Miller, Sue Kuuskamae, Frances Nebolon, Audrey Suer, Chris Centofante, and K. C. Johnson.

Discussion ensued over the displeasure of many of the artists regarding the perceived lack of support of the art groups by the Art Center administration. It was suggested that someone write a letter (or petition) to the Board expressing unhappiness with the Center.  It was further suggested that the idea be presented to the PVACA Board to carry to all seven groups seeking their participation. No action was taken.

Jim Morino announced that the presenter at the Paletteers meeting November 8 will be oil painter Vadim Zanginian.

Sue Kuuskamae announced a class forming at Destination: Art for October 23, from 9:30-3:30 on collage with Jacki Long. Cost is $80. Participants supply their own canvas and gel medium.

Kathy Bergstrom reminded the group of the Friday reception for Rejoice in Art at the United Methodist Church on Palos Verdes Drive North.

Tama Knowles reminded the group of the Artists Unlimited exhibition at the Malaga Cove Library Gallery running through October 22 with the reception being October 15 from 1-4 pm.

The Palos Verdes Art Center All Media Student and Instructor Holiday Sale will be Friday and Saturday, December 2 and 3. The application to participate must be submitted before November 7.

Annie Clavel announced two shows at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Ana–Art Start: An Affordable Holiday Art Sale November 5 through December 10 and a call for art (deadline December 30) for Incarceration February 4 through March 11, 2017.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:37 a.m. and was followed by a presentation by Dael Patton, Joanne Goodman, and Lois Olsen. Working on the same canvas, they each demonstrated how they approach their abstract art, and at the conclusion invited the members to add to the painting. The resulting painting was presented to the Paletteer present with the closest birthday to today–Kathy Bergstrom.
